Japan Earthquake 7.5 Magnitude Triggers Tsunami Warning – Latest Updates

 A strong earthquake hit off the northeast coast of Japan, and officials warned that a tsunami up to 3 meters (9.8 feet) could happen. This information came from Japan’s weather agency and the US Geological Survey.

Japan’s weather agency gave a 3-meter tsunami warning for Iwate prefecture and parts of Hokkaido and Aomori. In other nearby areas, they said smaller waves of up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) might occur.

The US said the earthquake was magnitude 7.4, while Japan later said it was 7.5. It’s not clear why the numbers are different. The tsunami warning was announced at 8:52 UTC.

A CNN reporter in Tokyo said the building they were in shook for about seven minutes.

Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, told people in affected areas to leave immediately and move to higher or safer places, like evacuation buildings. She said the government has created an emergency team to deal with the situation.

Officials are checking the damage, carrying out rescue work, and sharing information with the public. They are still finding out how much damage has been caused.

So far, the tsunami waves have been smaller than expected. A 0.8-meter (2.6-foot) wave hit Kuji Port, and the water there is still rising. Another 0.4-meter (1.3-foot) wave reached Miyako Port.

Some train services have stopped because of power cuts caused by the earthquake. This includes the bullet train between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori, and other trains in northern Japan.

Japan often has earthquakes because it is located on the “Ring of Fire,” an area with a lot of earthquake and volcanic activity. The biggest recent earthquake there was in 2011, which caused a huge tsunami and a nuclear disaster.
